TMJ & TMD Treatment

The temporomandibular joint (TMJ) in the jaw can be a source of pain and discomfort when there is dysfunction. TMJ or TMD is often the diagnosis when the joint does not work properly, affecting the muscles in the jaw, neck and head area. If you have TMD, or temporomandibular disorder, there are general dental treatments available to relieve the pain and protect the joint from further damage. At Columbine Creek Dentistry, our team can help accurately diagnose this condition and offer treatment for relief.

Symptoms of TMD can vary depending on the person. A popping or clicking noise when opening or closing the jaw can be one sign there is an issue within the TMJ. Other symptoms include headaches, jaw discomfort, neck pain or locking of the jaw. Some people may have numbness or tingling in the area or pain while chewing.

Treatment can vary depending on the cause and extent of damage to the joint. In many cases, TMD is made worse by teeth grinding or clenching the jaw during sleep. One treatment that is effective for many sufferers is wearing a customized night guard for the teeth to reposition the jaw and reduce pressure. Realignment of the bite through orthodontics can be another option. In severe cases, oral surgery may be required to repair damage to the jaw.
